Basic Support Plan: To earn a degree that fits students

"I would have had dropped out of college, had it not been for the assistance I got from Success Mentors. I am truly grateful for the help!"

Mr. Li,
University of California
at San Diego

Goals: Students will earn their US degrees within four years, and be prepared with the right skills to enter the work force. Well, you may think it basic, yet the reality is many students have difficulties in achieving it.

Do you know?

Phenomenon 1: Your child may not go to class, thanks to poor language skills, not interested in the subject area, addicted to computer games or simply cannot get out of bed to class.

Risks: If the lifestyle problems persist, students will not only suffer from poor grades, postponing time to graduate or barely graduate with minimum grades required, students will eventually lose confidence in themselves, and subsequently feel inadequate with the jobs assigned to them.

Phenomenon 2: Students may trigger disciplinary actions, because they breached the school policies, and/or were suspended on academic or non academic probation. Oddly enough, students might not take it seriously and tended to think they might get away with it.

Risks: Many students chose to cover this up and only ran into the problem when they tried to return to the States, while was being denied of F1 visa, and because their misbehavior had been recorded in the SEVIS system. Only by that time, parents would came to know what happened while it was too late.

Phenomenon 3: Students may clash with their American peers or struggled with their American teachers. They attempted to punish their teachers or peers by dropping out of the class or failing the grade. Obviously, they are unwittingly punishing themselves.

Risks: Students feel helpless while are so afraid of telling the truth to their parents. They don't want to frustrate their parents who have spent so much money and energy on their education. The problems build up while continuing to be ignored, until they become cost prohibitive to resolve.

Conclusion: Compared to poor grades, the more devastating scenario is a heart broken child, who loses confidence in him or herself, feeling empty inside while drifting away without knowing how to face to him or herself, let alone the parents.

Our Solutions:

1. Student Service System has a built in diagnostic assessment, which detects problems students may encounter at a particular stage of developments in their high school or college years.

2. Monthly intervention courses help students to identify their challenges at hand and suggest solutions to address the problems before they get too big to be resolved.

3. Virtual Help Desk provide real time feedback to students through their assigned peer counselors, and parents may share the knowledge and experiences through Parents Club.
